LAGOS — Dr. Doyinsola Abiola, renowned media icon and former Managing Director of National Concord Newspapers, has died at the age of 82. She was the widow of late business magnate and acclaimed winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola.
Family sources confirmed that Dr. Abiola passed away peacefully in Lagos on Tuesday, after a brief illness. Her death marks the end of an era for Nigeria’s media and pro-democracy movement, where she played significant roles for decades.
Fondly called “Doyin Abiola,” she was the first female editor of a national newspaper in Nigeria and later became the Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of National Concord, a publication owned by her late husband. Her leadership at the paper broke gender barriers in the country’s male-dominated media industry.
A trailblazer in journalism, Dr. Abiola combined editorial excellence with managerial prowess, mentoring a generation of journalists and influencing public discourse throughout her career. She was widely respected for her intellect, courage, and commitment to truth.
Beyond journalism, she was a key pillar behind MKO Abiola during his presidential campaign and the political turbulence that followed the annulment of the historic June 12 election. She remained a strong advocate for democracy, justice, and national unity.
Dr. Abiola held a doctorate in communications and was an alumna of institutions such as the University of Lagos and the University of Ibadan. Her legacy spans journalism, education, and national service.
Condolence messages have poured in from across the country, with media practitioners, politicians, civil society leaders, and citizens mourning her loss and celebrating her contributions to the nation.
Burial arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.
