2025 International Literacy Day: First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Urges Nigerians to Bridge Digital Divide

Abuja, Nigeria | September 8, 2025

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on Nigerians to unite in bridging the digital divide as a pathway to building a more inclusive and prosperous society.

In her message marking the 2025 International Literacy Day, themed “Promoting Literacy in the Digital Era”, Mrs. Tinubu emphasized that collective effort is essential in addressing digital exclusion, particularly among youth, women, and the underprivileged.

“By working together, Nigerians can close the gap of digital exclusion and open doors to a brighter and inclusive future for all,” the First Lady stated, stressing that literacy in the digital age goes beyond reading and writing to equipping citizens with the tools to thrive in an increasingly technology-driven world.

She further noted that the observance of International Literacy Day provides the nation with an opportunity to reflect on the importance of education and innovation in achieving sustainable development. According to her, a literate and digitally empowered population is the foundation of boundless opportunities, stronger communities, and national progress.

International Literacy Day, celebrated globally on September 8, was proclaimed by UNESCO in 1966 to highlight the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights, while also pushing for more inclusive educational strategies.
