2027: Badagry Indigenes Urge President Tinubu to Support Their Bid for Lagos Governorship

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the people of Badagry Division in Lagos State have made a passionate appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to support their quest to produce the next governor of the state under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The indigenes are calling for the zoning of the party’s governorship ticket to their axis, citing decades of political marginalisation despite their unwavering loyalty to the APC and the broader Lagos political structure.

Operating under the banner of the Concerned People of Badagry Forum, the group has emphasized that Badagry, which comprises one of the five traditional divisions of Lagos State, has remained a reliable pillar of support for the APC over the years, consistently delivering votes during every election cycle. Yet, despite this loyalty, the division has never produced a governor since the creation of the state.

A prominent member of the forum and APC stalwart in Badagry, Saka Fafunmi Shenayon, said the time has come for the people of the division to be given a fair shot at leading Lagos State. Shenayon disclosed that consultations are already underway to meet with President Tinubu and other influential party leaders to formally present their appeal and push for recognition within the party’s internal arrangements.

“We have supported the Lagos project since its inception. Badagry has never failed the APC, nor President Tinubu. We are not just demanding; we are requesting in good faith that this time, the governorship ticket be zoned to Badagry. We will present a credible, competent candidate that will uphold the legacy of progressive governance that Lagos is known for,” Shenayon stated.

In a joint statement signed by Shenayon alongside other respected Badagry indigenes, including Moses Ogunbiyi, Sejuro Samuel, Rofeequat Onabamiro, Kamoru Ajape, and Babatunde Olaide-Mesewaku, the group reiterated their call for equity and inclusion, stressing that political power in Lagos State should reflect fairness and rotational justice among its founding divisions.

The statement further highlighted the region’s underrepresentation in the political leadership of Lagos despite its historical significance and substantial contribution to the development of the state. They noted that granting Badagry the opportunity to produce the next governor would not only correct historical imbalances but also strengthen unity within the APC as it prepares for the next electoral cycle.

While the party leadership in Lagos is yet to make any official pronouncements regarding zoning for the 2027 governorship race, political analysts believe that increasing pressure from grassroots stakeholders like the Badagry Forum could shape internal party dynamics in the months ahead.

For now, all eyes remain on the APC’s national and state leadership, especially President Tinubu, whose influence in Lagos politics remains formidable. The people of Badagry are hoping their longstanding loyalty will be rewarded with a chance to make history.
