40 Para-Swimmers Set for Advanced Training at Governor’s Classic

The organizers of the Governor’s Para-Swimming Classics, have announced a five-day intensive training program designed to enhance the performance of 40 Nigerian para-swimmers through scientific techniques.

This initiative aims to elevate Nigerian para-swimmers to new competitive levels.

Speaking at a press briefing ahead of the event, which is set to take place from March 17 to 22 at the National Stadium in Lagos, the Convener and Vice President of the Para-Swimming Federation, Bose Kafo, emphasized the significance of the training.

She explained that the program is tailored to equip athletes with scientific knowledge to maximize their potential when representing Nigeria at major competitions.

“This initiative is a celebration of sporting excellence. The event will kick off with a podium challenge on the first day, followed by five days of specialized training. Our assessment shows that many para-swimmers struggle with endurance, resistance, and overall physical conditioning. This training will address those gaps,” Kafo stated.

She further noted that the program is particularly beneficial for para-athletes with upper limb, lower limb, and intellectual impairments. “We are looking for 40 to 45 committed swimmers eager to enhance their skills and contribute to the sport. We are also supporting participants by covering 60 percent of their transportation costs. To ensure safety, medical personnel and ambulances will be on standby. The event will conclude with awards and prizes,” she added.

The President of the Nigeria Paralympics Federation, Sunday Odebode, also assured that the federation is fully committed to supporting the athletes, whom he referred to as “persons of determination” (P.O.D).

“In our community, we recognize these athletes as P.O.D—Persons of Determination. As a federation, we are dedicated to their welfare and development. We are also engaging with the National Sports Commission to expand the impact of this initiative. Our team is working tirelessly to ensure everything goes as planned,” Odebode assured.
