MTN Champs Season 3 Attracts Over 2,000 Athletes to Benin

Organizers of the MTN Champs Athletics Series, have confirmed that 2,056 competitors will vie for honors in the third edition of the youth-focused tournament, which is set to commence in Benin City.

Bambo Akani, Founder of the Sports Development Organization Making of Champions, released the registration figures during a press conference ahead of the three-day event.

He said Benin previously hosted the inaugural season, which successfully uncovered promising talents now benefiting from international opportunities.

“Several athletes scouted through this platform are currently honing their skills abroad through full scholarship programs,” Akani stated, expressing optimism that these emerging stars would represent Nigeria honorably on global platforms in the future.

Osaze Ebueku, Senior Manager for Sponsorship and Market Strategy at MTN, reinforced the telecom giant’s commitment to talent development. “Our mission is to identify raw potential and systematically nurture future champions,” he said, emphasizing the company’s sustained partnership approach to elevate Nigerian athletics.

Ebueku praised Edo State’s collaboration, stating, “The government’s involvement underscores the significance of this initiative in transforming grassroots sports.”

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, represented by State Sports Commission Chairman Amadin Enabulele, reiterated the administration’s grassroots sports agenda. The governor has authorized access to Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium and provided operational support for the event, aligning with his mandate to “actively scout talents across all communities.”

“Initiatives like MTN Champs align perfectly with our strategy to identify promising youngsters early and provide pathways for growth,” Enabulele added.

The tournament continues MTN’s multi-year partnership with Making of Champions, which has gained recognition for bridging the gap between Nigeria’s athletic potential and international competitiveness.
