Lagos – The table tennis competition at the ongoing National Sports Festival (NSF) is set to offer a total of 46 gold medals across various categories, making it one of the most competitive and medal-rich events of the festival.
The tournament features athletes competing in three divisions: able-bodied, para-athletes, and deaf athletes. The able-bodied category will contest for seven gold medals, including singles, doubles, mixed doubles, and team events for men and women. The para-athlete category is the most extensive, with 34 gold medals available across multiple classifications and event formats. Meanwhile, the deaf athletes will compete for five gold medals.
Delta State, known for its strong table tennis contingent, leads the seedings in both the able-bodied and para-athlete categories. Notable players such as Fatima Bello and Olajide Omotayo are among the top contenders. Lagos and Oyo States dominate the seedings in the deaf category.
Officials and tournament referees have expressed optimism about the high standard of play this year, noting the participation of top players and new talents emerging through the competition. The event is also seen as an opportunity to scout and nurture promising athletes for future national and international competitions.
As the festival progresses, the table tennis events are expected to provide thrilling matches and showcase the depth of Nigeria’s sporting talent across all categories.
