Abuja, Nigeria – August 7, 2025
In a major step toward rehabilitative justice, the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), in collaboration with Shammies Unusual Heart Foundation, has launched a National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) centre at the Kuje Custodial Centre in the Federal Capital Territory. Seventy inmates have been registered for the 2025 November/December NABTEB examinations.
The new examination centre, equipped with laptops, textbooks, and teaching aids donated by the Foundation, marks a significant milestone in expanding access to formal education and vocational certification within Nigeria’s correctional system.
“This initiative is a game changer,” said Controller of Corrections, FCT Command. “By equipping inmates with technical and business skills, we are not only restoring dignity but also increasing their chances of reintegration into society.”
The program is part of broader efforts to reduce recidivism through education. Shammies Foundation, which has supported inmate learning across several facilities, announced plans to expand the project to Suleja Custodial Centre in the coming months.
The partnership underscores a growing shift in Nigeria’s correctional philosophy from punitive incarceration to restorative, skills-based rehabilitation.
