NABTEB CEO: Trade Placements to Be Merit-Based, Skills Key to Economic Growth

Abuja, Nigeria – June 16, 2025
The Chief Executive Officer of the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB), Dr. Aminu Mohammed, has confirmed that trade placements for vocational skills—such as solar maintenance, tailoring, and other technical disciplines—will be strictly based on candidates’ performance scores and demonstrated aptitude.

Speaking on Monday, Dr. Mohammed emphasized the Board’s commitment to merit-based placements as part of a broader national drive to reposition technical education and reduce youth unemployment. He added that beneficiaries of the program will also receive starter packs and access to loans from the Bank of Industry (BOI) to support post-training entrepreneurship.

“We’re making sure placements are fair, transparent, and matched to each candidate’s capacity. With the right tools and credit support, these young Nigerians will not only create jobs but also drive economic growth,” he said.

According to Dr. Mohammed, NABTEB’s revamped approach aligns with the federal government’s agenda on skill acquisition and youth empowerment. He stressed that with Nigeria’s fast-growing population, technical education must be treated as a priority sector to ensure sustainable development.

“Skills are the real key to Nigeria’s economic growth,” the NABTEB boss asserted.

The initiative, he noted, is expected to create pathways for self-employment, improve access to finance, and deepen the role of technical and vocational education in national development.
