Former Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant has claimed that Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen would be a game-changer for Chelsea if the Premier League giants succeed in signing him this summer.
Osimhen, who is currently on loan at Galatasaray from Napoli, has been heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge for the past two years. Despite rejecting Chelsea’s advances last summer over personal terms, speculation persists that the Blues could renew their interest in the prolific forward.
Pennant, speaking on Talk Sports, emphasized Osimhen’s clinical finishing and suggested that his arrival could address Chelsea’s struggles in front of goal.
“He would change things for Chelsea without a shadow of a doubt. He knows how to put the ball in the back of the net. His numbers are flying in—they’re great,” Pennant said.
The former England international compared Osimhen to Chelsea’s current striker Nicolas Jackson, highlighting the Nigerian’s superior conversion rate.
“Jackson gets three or four clear chances a game but often fails to score. That’s why Chelsea end up drawing or losing matches they should win. A player like Osimhen, who is prolific in front of goal, would massively boost Chelsea—or any team, for that matter.”
While Chelsea remains a strong contender for Osimhen’s signature, other clubs are also in the race. Reports suggest that Manchester United is monitoring the situation, while Juventus is preparing a player-plus-cash offer to Napoli for the 25-year-old.
Osimhen’s current form makes him one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe. At Galatasaray, he has netted 20 goals and provided four assists in just 20 Super Lig appearances, helping the Turkish side maintain their lead at the top of the table. Across all competitions, he boasts an impressive 26 goals and five assists in 30 matches.
The Super Eagles star is also shining on the international stage. Last Friday, he scored twice in Nigeria’s 2-0 victory over Rwanda in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier, keeping their hopes alive for a spot in the tournament set to be held in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
With Chelsea reportedly preparing a fresh approach, Osimhen’s next move could be one of the biggest transfer sagas of the summer. If he does make the switch to Stamford Bridge, Pennant believes he could be the missing piece in Chelsea’s quest for silverware.
Will Osimhen finally join Chelsea? Or will another European giant swoop in? The transfer battle is heating up.
