In a bid to steer Niger Delta youths away from illegal activities and towards productive ventures, the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Escravos of the Nigerian Navy has organized career talks and medical outreach programs for host communities in Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State.
Commanding Officer of FOB Escravos, Navy Captain Ikenna Okoloagu, revealed that the initiative aligns with the strategic directives of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, and the operational mandates under Operation Delta Sanity II.
Speaking at the event, Okoloagu emphasized that the program aims to reorient youths towards meaningful career opportunities and dissuade them from involvement in criminal activities. “This initiative is part of our efforts to appreciate our host communities and reinforce the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to fostering security, development, and cooperation,” he stated.
Career and Educational Support
The career talk, conducted in collaboration with Kedahan Services Limited Training School, introduced participants to various career and business opportunities. The program aimed at broadening their perspectives on vocational and entrepreneurial paths to encourage self-reliance and contribute to national development.
Additionally, an educational support program was held, providing school pupils with essential learning materials, including school bags, mathematical sets, and writing tools.
Medical Outreach for Community Well-being
As part of the initiative, the Navy conducted a medical outreach program, offering free health consultations, medications, and distribution of treated mosquito nets and prescription eyeglasses. Beneficiaries also received health education on preventive care and wellness.
Okoloagu noted that such initiatives reinforce the Navy’s goodwill and deepen relationships between the military and host communities. “By engaging in social programs such as this, we build trust and cooperation, which is essential in sustaining security and stability within the maritime environment,” he said.
Community Leaders Commend Initiative
Expressing gratitude for the initiative, the Project Manager of Kedahan Services Limited Training School, Rosemary Imhnanwa, commended the Nigerian Navy for its proactive approach in empowering youths. She highlighted that the program would help reshape perceptions among locals, encouraging them to focus on opportunities rather than solely relying on government interventions.
“From our engagement with the community, we have been able to shift the narrative that the government must provide for all their needs. Instead, we encourage them to recognize opportunities and take proactive steps towards self-improvement,” she stated.
Similarly, the leader of Madangho Community, Mr. Solomon Uwawa, applauded the Navy’s effort, expressing hope that the initiative would help reshape the mindset of young people toward productive endeavors.
Aside from Madangho, the program also benefited residents of Arunton, Ajudaigbo, and Ogidigben communities, further expanding the impact of the outreach.
Strengthening Security and Economic Growth
The Nigerian Navy reiterated that the initiative aligns with broader national security objectives, as empowering youths and fostering community engagement are crucial to reducing illegal activities such as oil bunkering and maritime crime.
“The success of this initiative will not only improve security within the region but also contribute to increased crude oil production, ultimately enhancing Nigeria’s economic prosperity,” Okoloagu concluded.
With sustained efforts, the Nigerian Navy hopes to continue strengthening its relationship with host communities, fostering peace, security, and socio-economic growth in the Niger Delta.
