Salah Tops World Cup Qualifying Scorers Chart as Shocks Abound

Liverpool’s prolific scorer Mohamed Salah has taken the top spot in the World Cup qualifying scorers chart, netting six goals for likely qualifiers Egypt. The 32-year-old Egyptian began his campaign with a bang, scoring four times in a 6-0 rout of Djibouti on matchday one. He also found the back of the net in away matches against Guinea-Bissau and Ethiopia.

Salah’s impressive form has seen him emerge as the leading scorer in the qualifying rounds, with Wolfsburg striker Mohamed Amoura of Algeria sharing second place on five goals with five other players.

Group C Produces Shocks Galore

Group C has been the most unpredictable group in the qualifying rounds, with several shocks and upsets. Minnows Lesotho forced a draw in Nigeria, while Rwanda adapted better to a rain-saturated pitch to beat South Africa. Benin also came from behind to defeat Nigeria, and Zimbabwe snatched a 1-1 draw in Nigeria courtesy of Tawanda Chirewa’s added-time strike.

Popular Scorelines

A 1-0 scoreline has been the most common result during the first six rounds, with 33 of the 151 matches settled by a solitary goal. 2-1 and 2-0 results share second place, with 21 of each. Draws complete the top five most frequent scorelines, with 19 1-1 stalemates and 15 0-0 deadlocks.

Seeded Teams Justify Top Billing

Egypt, Morocco, Ivory Coast, Algeria, and Tunisia have justified their top seeding in their respective groups, leading the way with four matchdays remaining. However, not all seeded teams have fared well, with Mali and Nigeria lying fourth in their groups, six points behind the leaders.

Morocco Boast Perfect Record

2022 World Cup semi-finalists Morocco are the only team among the 52 currently involved to boast a perfect record, with five victories from five matches. The Atlas Lions have twice beaten Tanzania 2-0, Zambia 2-1, Congo Brazzaville 6-0, and Niger 2-1.
