President Donald Trump has made controversial statements suggesting Americans are urging him to pursue an unprecedented third term in office, despite such action being explicitly prohibited by the United States Constitution.
“People are asking me to run,” President Trump declared during an Oval Office press briefing yesterday when questioned about the possibility of seeking another presidential term beyond his current one.
The 78-year-old Republican leader, who began his second White House term on January 20th after previously serving from 2017 to 2021, elaborated on his position, saying: “I don’t know. I never looked into it. They do say there’s a way you can do it, but I don’t know about that, but I have not looked into it.”
When reporters asked about a hypothetical electoral contest between himself and former President Barack Obama, who completed his constitutionally-allowed two terms, Trump appeared enthusiastic about the prospect.
“That would be a good one, I’d like that,” the President remarked.
These statements follow comments made during a Sunday interview with NBC News where Trump emphasized, “I’m not joking” about considering a third term bid.
The idea of serving beyond two presidential terms directly conflicts with the 22nd Amendment of the US Constitution, which was ratified in 1951 following World War II. This amendment explicitly states that no individual may be elected to the presidency more than twice.
America’s first president, George Washington, established the two-term tradition when he declined to seek a third term after completing his second in 1797. This precedent stood as an unwritten rule for nearly 150 years until it was formally codified in the Constitution through the 22nd Amendment.
President Trump’s comments about potentially circumventing this constitutional limitation have raised concerns among political analysts regarding respect for established democratic norms and constitutional boundaries.
