A tragic road accident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has claimed six lives and left several others with varying degrees of injuries, according to emergency response officials who arrived at the scene yesterday.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident occurred near the Sagamu Interchange section of the expressway, involving a commercial bus and a heavy-duty truck in what witnesses described as a high-impact collision.
“Our officers responded immediately upon receiving reports of the accident. Sadly, six persons were confirmed dead at the scene while the injured victims have been transported to nearby medical facilities for urgent treatment,” stated the FRSC Sector Commander for Ogun State.
Preliminary investigations suggest that excessive speeding and dangerous overtaking may have contributed to the fatal crash, which happened during the early morning hours when visibility was reportedly compromised by light fog.
“The commercial bus, which was traveling from Ibadan towards Lagos, attempted to overtake another vehicle when it collided head-on with an oncoming truck,” explained a traffic enforcement officer involved in the rescue operation.
Emergency responders from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), FRSC, and the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) collaborated to manage the accident scene, extracting victims from the wreckage and directing traffic around the affected area.
Medical personnel at the State Hospital in Sagamu, where most of the injured were taken, described the victims’ conditions as ranging from critical to stable, with several requiring surgical interventions.
“The hospital has activated its emergency response protocol, and our medical team is working diligently to provide necessary care to all the victims brought in from the accident,” the hospital’s Medical Director stated.
The FRSC has launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash, with officials emphasizing the need for motorists to adhere strictly to speed limits and safety guidelines, particularly along the busy Lagos-Ibadan corridor known for frequent accidents.
Authorities have contacted the families of the deceased and established a help desk to provide information to concerned relatives of victims involved in the accident.
