Abure Asserts No Vacancy in LP Leadership, Warns Obi and Otti

The National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Julius Abure, on Monday dismissed claims of any vacancy in the party leadership, following the recent Supreme Court judgment. Speaking at a public conference ahead of the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting at the party’s secretariat, Abure emphasized that the Supreme Court’s ruling was clear in reaffirming the party’s internal affairs and its authority in such matters.

Abure, in his first public appearance since the ruling on Friday, took a firm stand, addressing the ongoing speculation about the leadership of the party. He reiterated that there was no leadership vacuum within the LP and warned against any attempts to misinterpret the Supreme Court’s judgment.

The LP chair also criticized the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, and Governor Alex Otti, accusing them of betraying the party. He stated, “There is no vacancy in the Labour Party. We do not betray our candidates, even though some may betray us after being given tickets.”

Abure further called on those misled by the speculative interpretations of the Supreme Court ruling to disregard them. He reaffirmed his position as the National Chairman of the LP, stressing that the party’s constitution does not recognize the formation of a caretaker committee for party affairs.

The Labour Party leadership crisis had stirred significant debate in the aftermath of the judgment, but Abure’s statement sought to quell any uncertainty regarding the party’s leadership structure.

More updates are expected as the situation unfolds.
