Remo Stars head coach, Daniel Ogunmodede, remains optimistic about his team’s chances of winning the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title, despite suffering a 1-0 defeat to Rivers United in a top-of-the-table clash on Sunday in Port Harcourt.
The only goal of the match came in the 84th minute, courtesy of Bolu Sholumade’s header from a cross delivered by former Sunshine Stars teammate, Taiwo Abdulrafiu. The win closed the gap between second-placed Rivers United and Remo Stars to five points, making the race for the title even tighter.
Despite the setback, Ogunmodede expressed confidence that Remo Stars are still firmly in contention for their first-ever NPFL crown. “We lost concentration for a split second, and we paid for it. We had three clear-cut chances, and in general, it was a good game for both teams. It showed how much we both wanted the win,” he said after the match.
Ogunmodede remained undeterred by the defeat, insisting that his side could bounce back strongly. “There are no complications. If we win our next home game, we’ll be back to an eight-point lead. We still have three more home matches, and we’ll give our best to secure maximum points. It’s a fierce competition, and we’re relishing it,” he stated.
With six games remaining, Remo Stars lead the league with 60 points, while Rivers United sit second with 55 points. Remo Stars are now pushing for their first-ever NPFL title in the club’s 15-year history. Having narrowly missed out on the title in the last two seasons, losing to Enyimba and Rangers International, Ogunmodede’s side will be aiming to finally secure the top spot this season.
“We are almost there,” Ogunmodede added. “In the next six weeks, we should be talking about this.”
