Ondo Governor Disbands State Football Agency Board On Sweeping Reforms

In a major shake-up of Ondo State’s sports administration, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has dissolved the board of the Ondo State Football Agency (ODSFA) with immediate effect, signaling his administration’s commitment to revitalizing sports development in the Sunshine State.

The dissolution, announced yesterday through a statement from the Governor’s office, comes amid growing concerns over the state’s declining football fortunes and calls from sports stakeholders for fresh leadership to steer the agency responsible for managing the state’s flagship football club, Sunshine Stars FC.

According to sources close to the Government House in Akure, the Governor’s decision follows a comprehensive review of the agency’s performance and operational challenges that have plagued the once-thriving football club in recent seasons.

“His Excellency has carefully evaluated the situation and determined that a complete overhaul is necessary to restore Ondo State’s prominence in national football,” said the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, who confirmed the dissolution order. “This decision underscores the administration’s dedication to excellence in sports and youth development.”

The dissolved board, which had been constituted during the previous administration, has faced criticism from fans and sports analysts for management issues that allegedly contributed to Sunshine Stars’ inconsistent performances in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

Football enthusiasts across the state have welcomed the development, expressing optimism that the dissolution would pave way for qualified professionals to manage the state’s football interests. Ademola Ogunjobi, Chairman of the Ondo State Football Supporters Club, described the move as “long overdue” and “a positive step towards rekindling the glorious days of Sunshine Stars.”

The Governor has directed the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development to oversee the affairs of the agency pending the constitution of a new board. A technical committee is expected to be announced within the week to ensure smooth operations of Sunshine Stars FC during the transition period.
Industry observers note that this development aligns with Aiyedatiwa’s earlier promises to prioritize sports as a catalyst for youth engagement and economic development in the state. During his inaugural address after being sworn in as governor, he had pledged to revamp sporting facilities and create viable pathways for talented youth.

“We anticipate a new direction that will emphasize grassroots development, proper talent management, and transparent administration,” commented a veteran sports journalist who has covered Sunshine Stars extensively. “The governor’s decisive action suggests he understands the importance of football to Ondo people and is ready to invest in sustainable structures.”

The statement from the Governor’s office indicated that nominations for the new board would be based on proven expertise, passion for football development, and administrative competence, with an announcement expected in the coming weeks.

As the state awaits the constitution of a new board, fans remain hopeful that this administrative reset will translate to improved performances on the pitch and restore Sunshine Stars as a formidable force in Nigerian football
