The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has officially declared Tuesday, April 29, 2025, as the first day of Dhul Qa’adah 1446 After Hijrah (AH).
The announcement was made following the established tradition of moon sighting reports across various parts of the country. In a statement issued through the Sultanate Council in Sokoto, His Eminence affirmed that credible testimonies from Islamic scholars and moon sighting committees confirmed the appearance of the new crescent, marking the beginning of the eleventh month in the Islamic lunar calendar.
Dhul Qa’adah, known as one of the four sacred months in Islam, is a significant period leading up to the Hajj pilgrimage, during which warfare is traditionally prohibited, and acts of worship and reflection are greatly encouraged. The Sultan, who serves as the spiritual leader of Nigeria’s Muslim community, urged all faithful to take advantage of the sacred month to intensify prayers, promote peace, and uphold the teachings of Islam.
The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs also lauded the efforts of all moon sighting committees across the federation for their diligence and devotion in upholding the Islamic tradition. The council reiterated the importance of unity and obedience among Muslims, particularly during sacred periods, while praying for the stability and prosperity of Nigeria.
With the declaration, Muslims across the country are expected to align their religious observances accordingly, while preparations for the forthcoming Hajj rites enter a crucial phase. Saudi Arabia had earlier announced enhancements in logistics and facilities ahead of the 2025 Hajj season, with millions of pilgrims from across the world expected to converge at the holy sites.
The beginning of Dhul Qa’adah thus serves as a timely reminder for intending pilgrims to finalize their spiritual and logistical preparations, as the countdown to the sacred journey to Makkah and Madinah accelerates.
