Former Governor of Delta State, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has strongly criticized former Senate President Bukola Saraki for condemning his recent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Okowa, who served as the PDP’s vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, stated that Saraki has no moral right to question his political choices.
The controversy began after Senator Saraki described Okowa’s defection as “unbecoming and shocking,” arguing that it was unprecedented for a former running mate of a major party to switch allegiance to the ruling party. Saraki maintained that such actions undermine the integrity of Nigeria’s political system and urged those leaving the PDP to do so quietly, allowing the party to focus on rebuilding.
In his response, Okowa defended his decision, insisting that political realignments are part of Nigeria’s democratic process. He argued that every politician must act according to their convictions and the interests of their constituents. Okowa further contended that Saraki, given his own political history, was in no position to criticize others for switching parties.
The defection of Okowa, along with other top Delta State officials, has sparked debate within political circles, with some viewing it as a significant shift in the state’s political landscape. While the PDP leadership has called for calm and unity among its members, Okowa’s move is seen as a major test of the party’s resilience ahead of future elections.
Political analysts note that the development highlights ongoing tensions and realignments within Nigeria’s major parties, as leaders position themselves for influence in the evolving political climate.
