APC Mourns Former Plateau Deputy Governor, Prof. Sonni Tyoden

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Professor Sonni Gwanle Tyoden, a former Deputy Governor of Plateau State and prominent academic, who died on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at the age of 74.

Professor Tyoden, a seasoned scholar and respected statesman, served as Deputy Governor of Plateau State between 2015 and 2023 under the administration of former Governor Simon Bako Lalong. His tenure was marked by a commitment to peace-building, public sector reform, and youth development in the state.

In a statement released by the APC National Publicity Secretary, the party described Tyoden’s death as a painful loss not only to Plateau State but also to Nigeria’s academic and political communities. The statement highlighted his intellectual contributions, integrity in public service, and unwavering commitment to the party’s ideals.

Born in 1950 in Pushit District of Mangu Local Government Area, Professor Tyoden earned national recognition long before venturing into politics. He was a Professor of Political Science and served as Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos from 2006 to 2011. His scholarly work, particularly in governance and political development, shaped the thinking of many policy makers and academics across Nigeria.

Former Governor Simon Lalong, in his personal tribute, described Tyoden as a “teacher, mentor, political ally and true patriot” whose wisdom and loyalty were instrumental during their eight-year administration. Lalong led a delegation of former cabinet members on a condolence visit to the family home in Rayfield, Jos, and prayed for the repose of the late professor’s soul.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State also joined in mourning the former deputy governor, describing him as a pillar of knowledge and peace whose legacy in both academia and governance would be remembered for years to come. In a condolence message issued by his media team, Governor Mutfwang extended his sympathies to the Tyoden family, the APC, and the people of Plateau State.

Funeral arrangements for the late professor are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days. He is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren.

Professor Sonni Tyoden’s death leaves a significant void in the political and academic landscape of Nigeria. His life of service, scholarship, and leadership continues to be celebrated as tributes pour in from across the country.
