Sanwo-Olu Receives 22nd National Sports Festival Torch of Unity in LagosLagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, on Monday, May 12, 2025, received the symbolic Torch of Unity for the 22nd National Sports Festival at the Lagos House, Alausa, Ikeja — marking Lagos’ active participation in the nation’s premier multi-sport event.
The Torch of Unity, a traditional emblem of peace, unity, and national sportsmanship, was officially handed over to the Governor by officials of the Federal Ministry of Sports Development, signifying Lagos State’s readiness to contribute meaningfully to the success of the upcoming festival.
Speaking during the brief but symbolic handover ceremony, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the sports festival as more than a competition, calling it a celebration of unity, resilience, and youth development across Nigeria. He reaffirmed Lagos State’s unwavering support for the National Sports Festival and for sports development as a whole.
“Lagos is not just a participant in sports; we are a key driver of youth empowerment, talent discovery, and national integration through sporting excellence. This torch represents the fire of our commitment,” Sanwo-Olu stated.
The Governor further emphasized the significance of sports in promoting national unity, health, and economic opportunities for young Nigerians. He assured that Team Lagos is fully prepared, well-equipped, and poised to showcase outstanding performance at the games.
Accompanied by top officials from the Lagos State Sports Commission and members of the state executive council, the Governor received the torch amidst fanfare and solidarity chants from athletes and sports enthusiasts present at the event.
The 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival, often referred to as Nigeria’s “Olympics,” will bring together athletes from across the 36 states and the FCT to compete in various sporting disciplines, promoting national cohesion and celebrating Nigeria’s diversity through sports.
As the Torch of Unity continues its nationwide relay, Lagos joins in the collective journey of strengthening the bond that unites Nigerians through the spirit of fair play, excellence, and shared national pride.
