Lagos Issues Traffic Advisory as President Tinubu Attends High-Level ECOWAS Summit on Victoria Island

The Lagos State Government has released a detailed traffic advisory ahead of the high-profile Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Summit scheduled to hold on Tuesday, May 28, at key locations within Victoria Island. The summit, which is expected to host regional leaders and top dignitaries from across West Africa, will take place at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) and the Eko Hotel and Suites, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in attendance.

Given the anticipated high volume of vehicular movement and VIP convoys, the state’s Ministry of Transportation has outlined alternative routes to help ease potential gridlock and ensure smooth traffic flow in and around the affected areas. The advisory was issued on Monday by the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, who urged motorists to cooperate with traffic officials and plan their journeys ahead of time.

Motorists traveling from the Eko Hotel Roundabout towards Lagos Island or the Mainland are advised to make use of Adetokunbo Ademola Street, pass the Civic Centre, and turn left onto Ozumba Mbadiwe Road. From there, they should proceed straight to the Bonny Camp Roundabout and turn right to head in the direction of Lagos Island or the Mainland. Alternatively, drivers can connect through the Falomo Ramp by the Nigerian Law School to access the same destinations.

Those seeking to reach Ahmadu Bello Way, Adeola Odeku, and adjoining inner roads from Eko Hotel Roundabout are advised to exit via Ajose Adeogun or Adetokunbo Ademola, then pass through Sanusi Fafunwa Street to Akin Adesola Road. A left turn at the end of the road leads directly to Ahmadu Bello Way, Atlantic City, or Adeola Odeku, while a right turn connects motorists to the Falomo Bridge or back towards the Nigerian Law School area.

Drivers approaching from Kofo Abayomi Road intending to link up with the Bonny Camp or Ozumba Mbadiwe corridor can access the route through Kilimanjaro Junction along Ozumba Mbadiwe. From that point, they may either turn left to reach Bonny Camp Roundabout or head right towards Lekki via the same road. Conversely, motorists heading from Bonny Camp to Kofo Abayomi Road should proceed along Ozumba Mbadiwe and turn right at Kilimanjaro Junction to reach their destination through the Lagos Continental Hotel access.

For those coming from Independence Bridge or McEwen Bridge en route to the Eko Hotel axis, the advisory recommends turning left at the IMB Junction along Ahmadu Bello Way, passing Atlantic City, and then connecting through Akin Adesola Road via inner link roads.

The Commissioner gave assurances that officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will be fully deployed to the major intersections and corridors impacted by the summit. Their role will be to manage vehicular movement, provide real-time traffic assistance, and reduce any inconveniences to commuters and residents during the event.

Mr. Osiyemi urged Lagosians to remain patient and cooperate with traffic personnel, emphasizing that the measures are temporary but necessary to accommodate the diplomatic gathering and maintain the state’s reputation as a capable host city.
