Nigeria Customs Service Clarifies Viral Shooting Video as 2019 Incident

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has addressed a video circulating on social media depicting a shooting incident involving its officers, clarifying that the footage is from 2019 and not a recent event.

In an official statement, NCS spokesperson Abdullahi Maiwada confirmed that the incident occurred on February 17, 2019, at the Shagamu Interchange in Ogun State. He emphasized that the Service had promptly investigated the matter at the time, resulting in the dismissal of officers found culpable.

“Following the ugly occurrence at the Shagamu Interchange, the Service took immediate steps to address the situation in line with its internal procedures,” Maiwada stated. “A public statement was issued, and a disciplinary panel was established to investigate the matter thoroughly. At the end of the process, appropriate sanctions were applied, including the dismissal of the officers found culpable.”

The NCS urged the public to refrain from sharing outdated or misleading content, highlighting the importance of verifying information through official channels. The Service reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability, and adherence to the rule of law under the leadership of Comptroller-General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.

“We deeply value the vigilance and feedback of Nigerians and reaffirm our commitment to delivering professional, accountable service while upholding the principles of integrity and respect for human dignity,” the statement concluded.
