Renowned public affairs analyst, Dr. Segun Showunmi, has stressed the strategic relevance of public relations in shaping Nigeria’s political landscape, urging political actors and PR professionals to adopt well-thought-out communication strategies that genuinely reflect the needs and aspirations of the people.
Dr. Showunmi made the assertion while speaking at the June edition of the Virtual Business Meeting organised by the Ogun State Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR). The session, which explored the theme “Politics and Public Relations: Assessing Our Democratic Journey as a Nation,” brought together professionals to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic progress, particularly in the context of the ongoing Democracy Month celebrations.
He challenged political players across party lines to rise above smear campaigns and instead invest in issue-based strategies that can earn public trust and foster national unity. According to him, it is imperative for leaders to understand the real challenges facing their constituents and offer actionable solutions, rather than engaging in divisive rhetoric.
“Public relations is not just about managing image during elections,” Dr. Showunmi stated. “It is about using strategic communication to align political goals with the realities of the electorate. Nigeria may have multiple parties, but it remains one nation — the vision to build it must also be unified.”
He emphasised that trust is a crucial currency in democratic governance, noting that political leaders must live modestly and in touch with the everyday realities of the people. “When leaders display a lifestyle that is disconnected from the struggles of the masses, they risk alienating the very people they seek to lead,” he added, calling for deeper involvement of public relations professionals in shaping authentic and inclusive political narratives.
The event also featured a welcome address by the Chairman of the Ogun NIPR Chapter, Mrs. Oluwaseun Boye, who lauded the members’ unwavering dedication and professionalism, which recently earned the chapter a Diamond Anniversary Engagement Award during the just concluded Nigerian Public Relations Week (NPRW) in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
“This award is more than just a symbol; it reflects our consistency, resilience, and commitment to the values of our profession. It belongs to every one of us who continues to uphold the standards of ethical and impactful communication,” Mrs. Boye remarked.
She further highlighted the significance of the June Business Meeting, noting that it provided a timely platform for introspection on Nigeria’s democratic journey. According to her, it also served as a clarion call to NIPR members to recognise their critical role in supporting democratic governance through strategic engagement, thought leadership, and public enlightenment.
The virtual gathering drew participation from PR practitioners, scholars, and professionals across different sectors, all united by the shared goal of strengthening Nigeria’s democratic ideals through responsible and people-centred communication.
