Abuja, Nigeria – June 15, 2025
The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has organised a capacity building training for security agencies to enhance the enforcement of accessibility standards and anti-discrimination laws in Nigeria.
The two-day training, held in Abuja, brought together officers from the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and other security outfits. The aim was to strengthen their understanding of the rights of persons with disabilities and equip them with practical tools for enforcing the provisions of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018.
In his opening remarks, the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Dr. James Lalu, emphasised the critical role security agencies play in protecting the rights of over 30 million Nigerians living with disabilities.
“This training is a vital step toward building an inclusive society. Security operatives must understand that their actions—or inactions—can either reinforce inclusion or deepen discrimination,” Dr. Lalu stated.
Sessions covered key areas including accessibility in public spaces, the use of inclusive language, arrest and detention protocols involving persons with disabilities, and mechanisms for addressing complaints of discrimination.
Participants commended the initiative, noting that it addressed gaps in their knowledge and would improve their professional conduct in relation to disability matters.
The Commission pledged to continue working with law enforcement agencies to ensure that disability rights are respected and upheld in all sectors of society.
