Gunmen Launch Deadly Attacks in Benue Communities, Dozens Feared Dead

Makurdi, Nigeria – June 16, 2025

A wave of deadly attacks by suspected armed gunmen has left dozens dead and several communities in Benue State in mourning. The violence, which erupted in the Mbaivur community near the Nigerian Air Force Base and extended to parts of Gwer West and Logo Local Government Areas, has forced hundreds to flee their homes.

According to eyewitnesses, the attackers stormed the affected communities late Friday night, shooting indiscriminately, burning homes, and destroying farmlands. The assailants, believed to be heavily armed herdsmen, reportedly invaded under the cover of darkness, catching residents off guard.

Benue State Police Command confirmed the attacks and said security operatives have been deployed to the troubled areas. “Our officers are on ground, and we are working with local vigilantes to restore order and bring the perpetrators to justice,” said Police Public Relations Officer, SP Catherine Anene.

While the exact casualty figure remains unclear, local sources report that at least 30 people have lost their lives, with many more sustaining injuries. Displaced residents are currently seeking refuge in neighboring communities and temporary camps.

Reacting to the development, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ordered immediate intervention by security agencies and urged Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia to spearhead reconciliation efforts aimed at restoring peace in the region. “These attacks are unacceptable, and the government will not rest until all those responsible are brought to book,” the president stated.

In a statement, Governor Alia condemned the attacks and assured victims of government support. “We are working with security agencies to protect lives and property. The government will ensure that affected communities receive the necessary humanitarian assistance,” he said.

Benue, a key agricultural state in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, has long suffered from deadly clashes often linked to disputes between farmers and herders. The latest incident has reignited calls for urgent national dialogue and a review of Nigeria’s security architecture.

Humanitarian agencies have begun providing emergency relief to victims, while local leaders continue to call for peace and justice in the wake of the tragedy. The security situation remains tense as the state awaits further action from the federal government.
