June 16, 2025 – Benue State, Nigeria
At least 14 individuals have been arrested in Benue State following a violent protest that led to a truck and its driver being set ablaze by an angry mob.
The incident occurred in the Yelewata area of Guma Local Government Area on Sunday after the truck reportedly crushed a local resident. Eyewitnesses said the situation quickly escalated as irate youths blocked the road, attacked the vehicle, and set it on fire with the driver still inside.
Confirming the development, the Benue State Police Command said security operatives responded promptly to restore order and arrested 14 suspects in connection with the violence.
Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Adesina, condemned the act and described it as barbaric and unlawful. He assured residents that those responsible would be prosecuted according to the law.
The state government has appealed for calm and urged residents to allow security agencies to investigate and handle the matter legally. The incident has sparked renewed concerns over mob justice and rising tensions in the region.
