Obasanjo Commissions Upgraded Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital, Zanna Abarma Road in Zamfara

Gusau, Zamfara State – June 18, 2025
Former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo GCFR, was warmly received in Zamfara State on Tuesday as he commissioned two landmark projects executed under the administration of Governor Dauda Lawal, in what has been described as a major milestone in the state’s urban renewal and healthcare transformation agenda.

The former president, accompanied by top state officials and traditional leaders, unveiled the newly rehabilitated and upgraded Ahmad Sani Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital in Gusau, the state capital. The event also marked the official opening of the Zanna Abarma Road, completed as part of the government’s strategic urban renewal project aimed at improving road infrastructure and access within the metropolis.

Governor Lawal, while speaking at the ceremony, highlighted the extensive modernization efforts at the Yariman Bakura Hospital, which included the renovation of 14 key departments and the construction of state-of-the-art facilities, such as a new radiology centre, laboratory, and an obstetrics and gynecology unit.

“We have not only rebuilt structures but also invested in technology to transform service delivery,” the governor said. “Our hospital now boasts advanced MRI and CT scan machines, and a digitized hospital management system to enhance efficiency and patient care.”

The initiative is part of the administration’s broader effort to overhaul healthcare delivery across Zamfara and position the state as a hub for quality medical services in the region.

In his remarks, Chief Obasanjo commended the governor for what he described as a “visionary and people-centered leadership,” urging other states to emulate Zamfara’s commitment to public welfare.

“The kind of innovation I’ve seen here today, particularly in the healthcare sector, is commendable. It is clear that the people of Zamfara now have access to facilities that rival some of the best in the country,” the former president said.

The projects, according to the state government, are among several others underway across key sectors, including education, agriculture, and digital governance—reflecting an administration focused on people-first development.

Residents and healthcare professionals in Gusau have welcomed the hospital’s upgrade, expressing hope that it will reduce medical tourism, improve health outcomes, and create new employment opportunities in the health sector.
