Akwa Ibom: HFDI Leads Massive Clean-Up to Mark World Environment Day

Uyo, Akwa Ibom – June 18, 2025

In a bold step toward environmental sustainability, the Hope for Development Initiative (HFDI) marked World Environment Day 2025 in Akwa Ibom State with a large-scale campaign aimed at ending plastic pollution.

The event, themed “Ending Plastic Pollution,” brought together volunteers, students, environmentalists, and government representatives for a clean-up exercise across key locations in Uyo, the state capital.

Speaking during the event, HFDI Program Director, Grace Effiong, emphasized the urgency of addressing plastic waste, which she described as one of the biggest threats to the environment and public health.

“Our mission is to educate, engage, and empower communities to act against plastic pollution. Today’s turnout shows a growing awareness and commitment to protect our environment,” she said.

The exercise included awareness walks, sensitization campaigns, and the distribution of eco-friendly waste bags to promote recycling and proper waste disposal.

Representatives from the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Environment lauded HFDI’s consistent advocacy and pledged stronger collaboration with civil society groups to implement long-term waste management strategies.

World Environment Day, observed annually on June 5, serves as a global platform for encouraging awareness and action for the protection of the environment.
