Abuja – June 27, 2025 — In a historic move, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Morenike Grace Henry (JP) as the first-ever female Chairman of the National Council of the Nigerian Legion. The appointment, announced by the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, marks a milestone in gender inclusion within Nigeria’s veterans’ community .
A retired military dental nurse and pioneer of the Female Military Veteran Association (FMVA), Henry currently serves as Director of Corporate Affairs at the Nigerian Legion’s national headquarters. She also chairs the FMVA and leads Hengramore Care Home, a veterans-focused NGO .
Her exemplary career includes her tenure in the Nigerian Army, where she retired in 2000, and her ongoing dedication to veteran welfare, especially in championing gender-sensitive support for female military veterans .
The presidency lauded the appointment as a testament to Tinubu’s commitment to affirmative action and empowering women in leadership roles. President Tinubu expressed confidence that Henry’s leadership will revitalize the Legion and enhance its engagement with ex-servicemen and women .
As Chairman, Henry will collaborate with the Ministry of Defence and other relevant bodies to improve veteran welfare, support the families of fallen soldiers, and initiate reintegration and training programmes.
This appointment not only shatters a significant glass ceiling but also signals a new era of inclusivity and institutional progress within Nigeria’s military veterans’ organisations.
