Islam and Corruption: Time for Nigerian Muslims to Lead by Example

Oyewo-Oyelere

Corruption in Nigeria is more than just stolen money, it is a betrayal of trust and a spiritual illness. Islam clearly forbids it. Allah warns in the Qur’an:

Do not cause corruption on the earth after it has been set in order…”

(Qur’an 7:56)

Yet, corruption is everywhere, public offices, schools, markets, even homes. It’s not only about governors looting billions. It includes everyday acts like bribing officers, inflating prices, or stealing office time.

Islam’s Cure for Corruption

1. Taqwa (God-consciousness): Knowing that Allah sees you, even when others don’t.

2. Amanah (Trust): Islam calls every believer to honesty, whether in leadership or in small business.

3. Accountability: Umar (RA) said: “Take account of yourselves before you are taken to account.”

What We Must Do

Say NO to bribes and shortcuts, even when “everyone is doing it.”

Teach our children the value of halal income and honest living.

Support leaders known for integrity, not just popularity.

Islam does not allow us to blame others while excusing ourselves. The Prophet (SAW) said:

“Every one of you is a shepherd, and every one of you is responsible for his flock…”

(Sahih Bukhari)

Conclusion

If we want Nigeria to change, we must first change ourselves. True Islam is not just prayer, it’s how we handle money, power, and trust.

May Allah make us trustworthy, clean our hearts, and bless our nation. Ameen.
