Education Minister Urges Dialogue to End FCT Primary School Teachers’ Strike

Abuja – June 30, 2025

The Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, has appealed to stakeholders in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) education sector to embrace constructive dialogue and a shared sense of responsibility in resolving the ongoing strike by primary school teachers.

Speaking during a strategic engagement with education officials and relevant stakeholders in Abuja, the Minister emphasized the urgent need to restore normalcy in public primary schools across the territory.

He acknowledged the concerns raised by the striking teachers, particularly regarding issues of welfare, unpaid salaries, and improved working conditions, but urged all parties to prioritize the academic future of the pupils, many of whom have been affected by the prolonged industrial action.

“The children are at the heart of our collective mission. We must find a common ground that protects their right to quality education while addressing legitimate grievances of the teaching workforce,” Prof. Mamman stated.

He also called on the FCT Administration and the leadership of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) to engage in meaningful dialogue, assuring that the Federal Ministry of Education is willing to facilitate peaceful negotiations where necessary.

The strike, which has lasted several weeks, has led to the shutdown of many primary schools under the Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB) in the FCT, disrupting academic activities and raising concerns among parents and education advocates.

The Minister reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the basic education system, calling for collaborative action to ensure that schools remain functional and conducive for learning.
