FG Secures 44 Fresh Convictions for Terrorism Financing

The Federal Government of Nigeria has recorded a significant breakthrough in its ongoing fight against terrorism, securing 44 new convictions against individuals found guilty of financing terrorist activities.

The convictions were obtained following detailed investigations and prosecutions carried out under the framework of the Kainji mass trial proceedings, which resumed recently in Niger State. The trial forms part of the government’s larger efforts to bring suspected terrorists and their financial backers to justice.

According to the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), the convictions were handed down after due legal processes, with the accused found guilty of various charges ranging from direct financial support to logistics provision for terrorist organisations.

Speaking during a press briefing on Saturday, July 12, 2025, the Minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s zero-tolerance policy for terrorism and its enablers, stressing that the convictions send a strong signal to individuals or groups involved in undermining national security.

He noted that the government remains committed to strengthening its counter-terrorism legal framework and deepening inter-agency cooperation to trace and block terrorism financing networks within and outside Nigeria.

The recent convictions bring the total number of secured judgments under the Kainji terrorism trials to over 500 since the first phase began in 2017. The trials, which are held behind closed doors for security reasons, involve suspects arrested by security agencies in various military operations across the country.

The government has also reiterated its commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights of victims and witnesses throughout the judicial process.
