In a bold step toward tackling unemployment and boosting youth empowerment, the Lagos State Government has partnered with Diageo Nigeria to train over 250 young people in hospitality, entrepreneurship, and retail under the Learning for Life (L4L) programme.
The initiative was officially launched on Monday, July 14, 2025, at The Wings Tower, Victoria Island, Lagos, and is a part of Diageo Nigeria’s broader commitment to sustainable development and inclusive growth. The programme is designed to equip beneficiaries with hands-on skills in bartending, hospitality, business development, and retail management, sectors that are increasingly critical in Lagos’ dynamic economy.
Representing Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu at the event was the Honourable Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Hon. Akinyemi Ajigbotafe, who praised Diageo Nigeria for its impactful role in empowering young Nigerians. He described the Learning for Life programme as a strategic intervention aligned with the State Government’s THEMES+ Agenda, which prioritises education, job creation, youth development, and social inclusion.
“This partnership between Diageo Nigeria and the Lagos State Government is a shining example of how public-private collaboration can drive meaningful change, especially in tackling unemployment and promoting skills development,” the Governor stated in his remarks delivered by the Commissioner.
The programme seeks to not only reduce unemployment but also foster sustainable livelihoods by preparing young people for productive careers in sectors that reflect the cultural and economic vibrancy of Lagos. By building a skilled and job-ready youth population, the initiative is expected to contribute significantly to the state’s long-term economic resilience and social stability.
As Lagos continues to emerge as a leading destination for tourism and business in West Africa, initiatives like Learning for Life are seen as critical tools for preparing its youth for global-standard employment opportunities while promoting inclusive prosperity.
