The Kano State Police Command has arrested twelve senior students of Government Secondary School, Bichi, following the gruesome death of two junior students who were allegedly tortured by their seniors. The incident, which occurred on Monday, July 14, 2025, has sent shockwaves across the state and sparked fresh calls for stricter anti-bullying measures in Nigerian schools.
According to police reports, the tragedy unfolded around 11:30 p.m. when a group of senior students allegedly lured four junior classmates into a hostel room, accusing them of committing “unnatural offences.” The situation escalated into a brutal assault that resulted in the deaths of 19-year-old Hamza Idris (SS3B) and 18-year-old Umar Yusuf (SS2C). Two other students—Ibrahim Ibrahim (SS2B) and Aliyu M. Nasir (SS2C), sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment at Bichi General Hospital.
Confirming the arrests, the spokesperson for the Kano State Police Command said that twelve students, all in SS3, have been taken into custody in connection with the assault. The principal of the school, Yusuf Ado Yakasai, formally reported the matter to the police on Tuesday, July 15, prompting immediate investigations and the apprehension of the suspects.
The police assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that justice will be served. “This is a grave incident. We have launched a thorough investigation, and anyone found culpable will be charged accordingly,” a senior police official stated.
The incident has triggered widespread condemnation from education stakeholders, parents, and child rights advocates, who are demanding accountability and urgent reforms to curb bullying and violence in schools. Many have called on the Ministry of Education and school administrators to intensify student supervision and establish more robust counselling and reporting systems.
Meanwhile, the Kano State Government is expected to issue a formal statement as pressure mounts on authorities to take decisive action and prevent a recurrence of such a tragedy.
As the investigation continues, the victims’ families, along with the broader community, await justice and stronger assurances that students in boarding schools across the country are protected from abuse and violence.
