The Federal Government has commenced a specialized training programme for health managers in Benue State, aimed at equipping them with systems-based leadership skills to enhance healthcare delivery at all levels.
The capacity-building initiative, coordinated through the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system by promoting efficient governance, strategic planning, and leadership accountability among frontline health administrators.
Speaking at the opening session in Makurdi, representatives of the Federal Government emphasized the urgent need to reposition health leadership structures, particularly at the subnational level. The training introduces participants to key frameworks in systems-thinking, stakeholder coordination, and results-driven management practices in line with the Health Sector Renewal Investment Programme.
Participants include directors from primary and secondary healthcare institutions, local government health officers, and key personnel from the Benue State Ministry of Health.
The Director of Health Planning, Research, and Statistics, Dr. Chris Isokpunwu, noted that building a resilient health system requires leaders who can integrate service delivery, financing, workforce, and data management into a cohesive framework that meets public health needs.
Benue State health authorities commended the Federal Government’s intervention, describing it as timely and critical for bridging leadership gaps in the sector. They pledged to translate the knowledge gained into tangible improvements across facilities.
The training is expected to improve strategic decision-making, resource optimization, and overall health outcomes for residents of Benue and surrounding regions.
