ABUJA, July 25, 2025 – The much-anticipated $2.8 billion Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) gas pipeline is finally set for mechanical completion in November 2025, following three deferments and years of intensive construction work.
The 614-kilometre gas transportation infrastructure, one of the most ambitious energy projects in Nigeria’s history, has reached over 86 percent completion, according to project managers. The pipeline, when operational, is expected to deliver up to 2.2 billion standard cubic feet of gas per day (bscf/d) to power plants and industrial hubs across Abuja, Kaduna, and Kano.
Managing Director of Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCo), Elohor Aiboni Ojulari, who is involved in aspects of the project, disclosed that the pipeline is designed to drastically improve gas availability for power generation and industrial use in northern Nigeria. She emphasised that the infrastructure will help revamp power supply and support Nigeria’s broader economic diversification agenda.
“The AKK pipeline is a strategic national asset. It will not only enhance domestic gas utilisation but also bolster power generation and industrial capacity in key northern cities,” Ojulari said.
The project, being implemented by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) and funded through a mix of domestic financing and sovereign guarantees, had faced several setbacks over the years due to funding delays and logistic challenges. However, officials have reaffirmed that final testing and mechanical wrap-up are now firmly scheduled for November.
Once completed, the AKK pipeline is expected to form a critical component of Nigeria’s gas master plan,
