Lagos Trains Health Workers in Emergency Response to Strengthen Life-Saving Capacity

August 3, 2025 — Health professionals across Lagos State have undergone intensive emergency medical training aimed at improving their ability to respond swiftly and effectively to life-threatening situations, as part of the Lagos State Government’s ongoing strategy to reduce preventable deaths and enhance emergency healthcare delivery.

The week-long programme, organised in collaboration with the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas (ANPA) and other health-focused partners, featured doctors, nurses, and community health extension workers drawn from both primary and secondary health facilities across the state. Training sessions covered critical modules such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), trauma response, obstetric emergencies, and urgent interventions for chronic conditions, including renal failure.

Conducted at designated training centres, the exercise incorporated simulation-based learning and scenario planning to equip frontline workers with practical, hands-on experience. According to officials from the Lagos State Ministry of Health, the training directly addresses challenges such as maternal mortality, delayed emergency care, and inadequate response capabilities in underserved areas.

Participants were carefully selected based on their roles and locations to ensure the training’s impact extends to a wider network of healthcare providers. They are expected to cascade the knowledge acquired to colleagues within their respective facilities, strengthening emergency response at the grassroots level.

The sessions were further enriched with international standards of emergency care, enabling health workers to apply globally recognised practices in their daily medical duties. This aligns with the government’s broader health sector goals, which prioritise capacity building, timely interventions, and improved access to life-saving tools.

State health authorities confirmed that this initiative is part of a larger effort to enhance workforce readiness across all sectors. Previous training programmes targeting traffic officers and teachers have also been conducted, underscoring Lagos State’s holistic approach to emergency preparedness.

Officials concluded that equipping health workers with these critical skills will not only boost their professional confidence but significantly reduce delays in emergency care, ultimately saving more lives across the state.
