Aviation Unions Calls Off Planned Strike

Lagos, Nigeria | August 9, 2025

Nigeria’s aviation sector has been spared potential disruption as major industry unions have called off a planned strike following successful negotiations with the Federal Government.

The unions, which include the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) and the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), had threatened to down tools over unresolved welfare issues, including salary adjustments, pension arrears, and improved working conditions.

Following a marathon meeting with officials from the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development in Lagos, the labour bodies announced a suspension of the strike, citing the government’s commitment to addressing their demands within an agreed timeline.

Speaking after the talks, NUATE’s General Secretary, Ocheme Aba, said the decision was taken “in the interest of passengers, industry stability, and ongoing dialogue,” but warned that the unions would resume industrial action if promises were not met.

The resolution comes as the aviation industry braces for increased passenger traffic during the upcoming holiday season, with stakeholders calling for sustained engagement to prevent further disputes.
