Lagos’ First Cake Picnic Ends in Chaos as Organisers Accept Responsibility

12 August 2025

What was intended to be a sweet and memorable gathering turned sour on Sunday as Lagos’ first-ever Cake Picnic descended into chaos, forcing organisers to apologise and take full responsibility for the disruption.

The event, held at a public park in Ikeja, had drawn hundreds of cake lovers eager to enjoy tastings, baking showcases, and family-friendly activities. However, the picnic quickly became overcrowded, leading to long queues, food shortages, and confusion over seating arrangements. Several attendees complained about poor crowd control, inadequate security, and delays in scheduled activities.

In a statement issued on Monday, the organisers admitted lapses in planning and logistics, citing an unexpected surge in turnout far beyond projected numbers. They assured that lessons had been learned and pledged to improve safety, crowd management, and service delivery in future editions.

Despite the disruptions, some participants expressed hope that the initiative could return next year with better organisation, noting its potential to become a signature culinary event in the state.
