Tinubu Plots ‘Trade Treasure Hunt’ as He Jets to Japan and Brazil

Abuja, Nigeria — August 14, 2025 | President Bola Tinubu will depart Abuja on Thursday, August 14, for a diplomatic tour spanning Japan and Brazil, with a short stopover in Dubai, as part of efforts to deepen Nigeria’s international partnerships, attract foreign investments, and strengthen bilateral cooperation.

In Japan, Tinubu will participate in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) from August 20 to 22 in Yokohama. With the theme “Co-create Innovative Solutions with Africa”, the summit will focus on Africa’s economic transformation, institutional capacity building, and improved business environment through private sector investment and innovation. Discussions will also address strategies for building a resilient, secure, and sustainable African society.

The President is scheduled to join plenary sessions, hold bilateral talks, and meet executives of Japanese companies currently investing in Nigeria. Initiated by the Japanese government in 1993, TICAD is co-hosted by the United Nations, UNDP, African Union Commission, and the World Bank, serving as a triennial platform for high-level policy dialogue between African leaders and global development partners.

After Japan, Tinubu will head to Brasilia from August 24 to 25 at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva for a two-day state visit. While in Brazil, he will hold bilateral meetings, participate in the Nigeria–Brazil Business Forum, and witness the signing of agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to boost trade, promote technology transfer, and expand cooperation.

Accompanying him will be key ministers and senior government officials tasked with securing investment commitments and broadening Nigeria’s economic footprint on the global stage.
