FG Slams Underuse of Federal Universities, Vows Policy Reforms to Boost Enrolment

Abuja, Nigeria — August 14, 2025 | The Federal Government has expressed dissatisfaction over low student enrolment in some federal universities, warning that the trend amounts to a waste of national resources and undermines the purpose of public investment in higher education.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, disclosed during a stakeholder engagement that several federal universities currently have fewer than 2,000 students despite enjoying significant infrastructure and budgetary allocations. He described this underutilisation as an inefficient use of facilities that could otherwise serve a larger student population.

Alausa said the government will initiate a review of admission policies and implement reforms aimed at maximising the capacity of federal universities, ensuring taxpayer funds are put to optimal use. He noted that the new measures will align with the administration’s broader education agenda, which seeks to improve access, strengthen technical and vocational training, and guarantee that all tertiary institutions deliver maximum academic and socio-economic value.
