Abuja, Nigeria — August 18, 2025

The Sokoto State Government says it is stepping up reforms in the education sector, with a focus on reducing out-of-school children, expanding examination support for students, and advancing digital-skills initiatives.

Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Prof. Ahmed Ala, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

Ala said the state, working with UNICEF, had profiled vulnerable children and begun integrating them into formal learning, stressing that the effort aims to curb dropout rates and boost enrolment.

He added that Sokoto has spent ₦4.7 billion over the past two years on registration fees for students sitting WAEC, NECO, JAMB, and NABTEB examinations.

In May 2025, the government, in partnership with UNICEF, launched a digital-skills training centre for Almajiri children and out-of-school girls, underscoring its drive to incorporate technology into learning.

While reports attributed to the commissioner suggested plans to fully digitalise basic and primary education within two years, no official policy document or confirmed budget currently outlines such a timeline.

Editor’s note: The two-year “full digitalisation” claim remains unverified and should be treated as an ambition rather than a confirmed programme until further details are released by the Sokoto Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education.
