Food Prices in Nigeria Show Mixed Trends in August 2025 as Garri, Onions Fall but Fish and Pepper Rise

August 18, 2025 — Nigeria’s Food Price Watch for August 2025 indicates notable fluctuations in the cost of essential food items, with some staples dropping sharply while others continue to climb.

The report shows that the price of a bag of white garri fell by 33.33 percent, providing relief to households that depend on it as a staple. Dry onions also became more affordable, declining by 15.38 percent, while Honeywell Semo, a popular semolina brand, dropped by 12.24 percent.

In contrast, prices of Titus fish, pepper, and pasta recorded increases, reflecting ongoing supply constraints and fluctuating market conditions. Analysts attribute the mixed trends to seasonal harvests and improved local production for some staples, alongside transportation costs and importation challenges impacting others.

Economists noted that while the decline in staple prices may ease household expenditure, the rising costs of proteins and processed foods continue to strain family budgets. The report highlights the importance of consistent monitoring of food markets and targeted interventions to ensure affordability and food security for Nigerians.
