Saudia Airlines Slashes International Fares by 50%, Eases Pilgrimage Costs for Umrah-Bound Travellers

In a significant move aimed at easing the financial burden of religious travel, Saudia Airlines, the national carrier of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, has unveiled a limited-time offer granting a 50 percent discount on international flight tickets for Umrah pilgrims. The offer, which covers both Economy and Business class fares, is open to passengers across key continents including North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa—regions from which a large number of Muslim faithful annually journey to the Kingdom for the sacred pilgrimage.

According to a statement from the airline’s headquarters in Jeddah, the discounted fares are available for bookings made until 31st August 2025 and are valid for travel between 1st September and 10th December 2025. This period falls within the post-Ramadan and pre-Hajj Umrah window, a time when many global pilgrims prefer to visit due to milder weather and manageable crowds in the holy cities of Mecca and Medina.

Saudia’s 50 percent discount applies to one-way, round-trip, and transit flights, making it a versatile option for travellers with varied itineraries. The promotion strategically targets peak Umrah seasons when demand traditionally surges, especially among diaspora Muslims and first-time pilgrims.
Bookings can be completed via the official Saudia website, the airline’s mobile app, or any of its authorized travel agents and sales offices worldwide. Travellers are strongly encouraged to secure their tickets early, as availability is limited and subject to high demand.

This initiative is seen by aviation and religious tourism analysts as a bold step by the Saudi government to reinforce its Vision 2030 strategy, which includes expanding religious tourism and making pilgrimage more accessible to Muslims globally. With Umrah attracting millions each year, the cost of airfare often forms a significant portion of the total expenses, particularly for pilgrims travelling from sub-Saharan Africa, including Nigeria.

Nigerian pilgrims—many of whom rely on seasonal chartered flights or agency-assisted packages—stand to benefit immensely from this fare reduction. For context, a typical round-trip international ticket from Lagos to Jeddah can cost between ₦600,000 and ₦1.2 million, depending on the class and season. A 50 percent slash potentially reduces this to as low as ₦300,000, offering major relief for budget-conscious pilgrims and families.

While the offer presents a timely opportunity, all standard travel requirements remain in place. Passengers are advised to ensure that they have valid travel documents, including an approved Umrah visa, and adhere to Saudi Arabia’s entry and health protocols. Baggage allowance and flight change policies also remain subject to the airline’s existing terms and conditions.

The Saudi government has in recent years increased efforts to enhance pilgrim experience through improved air transport, visa digitalization, and expanded airport infrastructure in Jeddah and Medina—two of the primary arrival hubs for Umrah visitors. Saudia Airlines’ current offer is expected to bolster these efforts by making air travel more inclusive and financially viable for millions of Muslims intending to fulfill their spiritual obligations.

As of today, the promotion has already sparked increased activity on travel platforms and among Umrah tour operators, many of whom are adjusting their packages to reflect the new pricing.
For Nigerian Muslims planning to embark on the spiritual journey in the final quarter of 2025, this development could not have come at a more opportune time.
