Ooni, Alaafin Clash Over Chieftaincy Title as Gani Adams Seeks Truce

Ile-Ife/Oyo, Nigeria – August 21, 2025

A fresh rift has emerged among prominent Yoruba monarchs following the conferment of the title Okanlomo of Yorubaland on Ibadan-based businessman, Chief Dotun Sanusi, by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi.

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, has strongly opposed the conferment, insisting that only his office holds the authority to bestow Yoruba-wide titles. He subsequently issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Ooni, demanding a revocation of the honour.

As of Wednesday, the Ooni has not rescinded the title, and the matter remains unresolved. In response to the growing tension, the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, confirmed that he has reached out to Yoruba monarchs and elders to intervene and mediate peace between the two palaces.

The development continues to draw attention across Yoruba land, with cultural leaders urging caution to preserve unity and prevent further escalation.
