Police Condemn Assault on Motorist, Vow Disciplinary Action Against Errant Officers

August 23, 2025 — The Nigeria Police Force has condemned the conduct of officers captured in a viral video attempting to forcibly remove a pair of glasses from a motorist during a stop-and-search operation in Lagos, describing the act as unprofessional and unacceptable.

According to a statement issued on Friday, the officers involved have been identified as personnel attached to the Lagos State Police Command. The Commissioner of Police for the state has been contacted and has already taken steps to ensure that those involved face appropriate disciplinary measures.

In addition, the Commissioner has ordered a restructuring of the squad implicated in the incident, in a bid to restore discipline, accountability, and professionalism within the unit.

The Force emphasized that the assault was an isolated case and does not reflect the values and standards of service expected from police personnel nationwide. It further assured Nigerians that the leadership remains committed to weeding out errant officers whose actions undermine public trust and tarnish the image of the Force.

“The Nigeria Police Force reiterates its zero tolerance for misconduct and will not hesitate to sanction any officer found culpable of violating the rights of citizens,” the statement read, while urging the public to continue cooperating with law enforcement agencies in the interest of safety and security.
