Abuja, August 27, 2025 — The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to harnessing space technology as a vital tool for strengthening national security, boosting economic development, and positioning Nigeria as a competitive player in the global digital economy.
The Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, stated this in Abuja while addressing stakeholders on Nigeria’s space programme and its role in tackling national challenges. He noted that investments in space applications would enhance intelligence gathering, border surveillance, disaster management, climate monitoring, agriculture, and infrastructure planning.
According to the Minister, satellite technology remains a key driver of Nigeria’s development, with potential to reduce reliance on foreign data sources, create jobs, and improve transparency in governance. He emphasized that the nation’s security agencies, farmers, health institutions, and private sector players already benefit from space-based solutions provided by the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA).
“Space technology is no longer a luxury; it is an essential instrument for modern security architecture, economic growth, and national prosperity. With enhanced monitoring capabilities and improved data analytics, Nigeria can effectively confront threats such as terrorism, banditry, oil theft, and environmental hazards,” Nnaji said.
The government assured that it would deepen collaborations with international partners while also encouraging local research institutions and innovators to expand Nigeria’s capacity in space science. Plans, he added, include upgrading satellite infrastructure, fostering public-private partnerships, and building human capital to sustain the sector.
Experts at the meeting noted that with the proper framework and adequate funding, Nigeria’s space programme could generate billions in revenue and significantly reduce capital flight in the telecommunications, oil, and agricultural sectors.
