GPS-Enabled PoS Will Help Curb Fraudulent Transactions – Obioha Oti

Lagos, August 28, 2025 — Financial technology expert, Obioha Oti, has stressed that integrating GPS technology into Point-of-Sale (PoS) machines will significantly reduce fraudulent activities in Nigeria’s fast-growing digital payment ecosystem.

Speaking on Thursday, Oti explained that GPS-enabled PoS would allow regulators, banks, and operators to track the exact location of each transaction in real-time, making it harder for fraudsters to manipulate or conceal their activities. He noted that fraud through PoS terminals has been on the rise, ranging from unauthorized withdrawals to fake transaction alerts, thereby undermining confidence in electronic payments.

According to him, “With GPS integration, every PoS transaction can be verified and traced back to a specific location. This innovation will not only protect customers but also restore trust in digital payments, which is critical for financial inclusion.”

He further urged payment service providers and financial institutions to embrace the technology as part of broader security reforms, while also calling on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to issue a regulatory framework that mandates the adoption of GPS-enabled PoS across the country.

Industry analysts believe that such a move could also help in tackling other issues such as transaction disputes, fraud rings operating across state borders, and unregistered PoS agents.
