Foreign Affairs Minister Represents Nigeria at 164th Ordinary Session of Arab League Council

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs has participated in the 164th Ordinary Session of the Council of the League of Arab States, reaffirming the country’s commitment to deepening diplomatic and multilateral ties with the Arab world.

The high-level meeting, which took place at the League’s headquarters in Cairo, Egypt, brought together foreign ministers and senior officials from member states to deliberate on pressing regional issues, including political developments, security challenges, economic cooperation, and the ongoing humanitarian crises affecting parts of the Arab region.

Representing Nigeria at the session, the Foreign Affairs Minister joined his counterparts in extensive discussions on ways to strengthen Arab unity, promote regional peace, and coordinate collective responses to current geopolitical tensions. The council also reviewed developments in Palestine, Sudan, Libya, Syria, and Yemen, with particular attention given to ongoing peace efforts and humanitarian interventions.

Nigeria’s participation in the session is seen as a significant step in reinforcing its longstanding observer relationship with the Arab League, while also exploring avenues for broader collaboration in trade, energy, education, and counter-terrorism efforts.

During the session, the Minister held bilateral talks with several counterparts on the sidelines, engaging in diplomatic discussions that focused on mutual interests, South-South cooperation, and Nigeria’s role as a bridge between Africa and the Arab world.

He emphasised Nigeria’s readiness to contribute to regional stability and to foster people-to-people connections through diplomacy, cultural exchange, and economic partnerships. The Minister also used the opportunity to advocate for enhanced support from Arab League countries in addressing transnational security threats, particularly in the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin regions.

The 164th Council session concluded with a joint communiqué outlining shared commitments to peace, cooperation, and sustainable development, as well as resolutions aimed at addressing ongoing crises within the region.

Nigeria’s continued presence at such high-level engagements underscores its foreign policy thrust centred on mutual respect, strategic alliances, and active participation in global and regional dialogue platforms.
