Lagos Government Moves to Curb Illegal Street Trading at Mile 12

Lagos, Nigeria | September 8, 2025

The Lagos State Government has intensified its enforcement campaign against illegal street trading at the popular Mile 12 axis, warning that defaulters will face stiff penalties.

The operation, led by officials of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) in collaboration with other enforcement agencies, comes as part of the government’s broader efforts to restore order, ensure free flow of traffic, and protect lives in one of the state’s busiest commercial hubs.

Authorities say street trading around Mile 12 has not only obstructed traffic but also posed significant safety and environmental hazards to both motorists and pedestrians. The state government noted that traders operating outside designated markets risk losing their wares, arrest, and prosecution under existing environmental and traffic laws.

Speaking on the development, a senior government official reaffirmed Lagos’ commitment to maintaining discipline in public spaces while providing safer and more organized alternatives for trade. He stressed that the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu will not relent in its drive to make Lagos a cleaner, safer, and more livable megacity.

The government also urged traders and residents to comply with regulations and support the state’s renewed urban order initiative, which seeks to balance economic activity with public safety and city planning.
